IWC Strap Sizing: Family Rules and Three Common Traps
Pilot: 40-41mm = 20mm; 43mm = 21mm; 46mm = 22mm. Portugieser: 40mm = 20mm; 41mm and up = 22mm (except Chronograph 41 which stays 20mm). Portofino: 37mm = 18mm; 40-42mm = 20mm; 45mm = 22mm. Aquatimer: all 22mm. Three traps: Big Pilot 43mm uses 21mm not 22mm. Portugieser Chronograph 41 uses 20mm despite being 41mm. TOP GUN 44.5mm Chronograph has integrated curved-end rubber, requires special end-piece for clean fit.

Leather Straps for the IWC Pilot
The IWC Pilot family began as a tool watch for British and German aviators during World War II. The riveted aviator strap with two large rivets at the lugs is part of the original design language, and the modern Mark series and Big Pilot still pair best with substantial leather that nods to that heritage.
Recommended leathers for the IWC Pilot family:
- Vegetable-tanned Buttero or vegtan leathers for the heritage aviator register. Develops a worn-in patina that matches the watch's tool-watch character.
- Brown or black calfskin in heavy gauge with two large rivets if you want to match the OEM aviator look. Specify "Pilot's strap" or "aviator rivets" at checkout.
- Alligator in dark colours for the dress-up option. Cognac Brown Alligator and Matte Black Alligator work particularly well on the Mark XX and Pilot's Chronograph 41.
- Crazy Horse and distressed leathers for the rugged daily wear option. Hides scratches from real use.

Leather Straps for the IWC Portugieser
The Portugieser was originally designed in the 1930s as a marine chronometer wristwatch for Portuguese watch importers. The large case with railroad minute track and slim Arabic numerals reads as elegant rather than sporty, despite the size. Almost no Portugieser looks correct on metal, leather is the canonical choice.
Recommended leathers for the Portugieser:
- Alligator in dark colours is the historically correct choice. Matte Black Alligator on a Portugieser Automatic 42 or Chronograph 41 is the safest first upgrade.

Leather Straps for the IWC Portofino
The Portofino is IWC's pure dress watch line. Named after the Italian Riviera town, the design is intentionally understated. Roman numerals, sub-second register, no chronograph pushers on most references. The slim case profile means the strap is more visible than on the Pilot or Portugieser, and the leather choice carries more weight on the overall look.
Recommended leathers for the Portofino:
- Alligator in black, dark brown, or cognac. The historically correct choice. Matte Black Alligator for modern dress, Cognac Brown Alligator for warm-dial Portofinos.
- Shell Cordovan in dark colours for the long-game dress watch register.

Leather Straps for the IWC Aquatimer
The Aquatimer is IWC's dive watch family. The internal rotating bezel design (operated via the crown at 9 o'clock) gives the watch a cleaner case profile than most divers, and the quick-change bracelet system means leather is an easy daily alternative.
Recommended leathers for the Aquatimer (all 22mm):
- Togo calfskin for daily wear. Scratch-resistant and handles real activity well.
- Epsom for the office-and-everywhere register. Khaki Epsom works on blue and black dial Aquatimers.
- Nubuck or suede for a casual dive watch register.
- Alligator for the dress-up option on formal occasions.

Practical Notes on Wearing Leather on an IWC
EasX-CHANGE quick-release. Most current Pilot, Mark XX, and Portugieser Automatic 40 references use IWC's EasX-CHANGE system, which lets you swap straps in seconds without tools. Aftermarket straps without the EasX bar mount still fit on standard spring bars but require a tool to change. Tell us your IWC reference at checkout so we can match the hardware.
Big Pilot 46mm cuff strap. The OEM Big Pilot 46 uses an oversized riveted cuff strap with an extra leather flap behind the case. A standard 22mm flat strap fits the lugs but won't replicate the cuff look. Specify "cuff strap" at checkout if you want the heritage style.
TOP GUN integrated rubber. The 44.5mm ceramic TOP GUN Chronographs (IW389001/101/104) ship with curved-end rubber that hugs the case. A flat 21mm leather strap will fit but leaves a visible gap. For clean fit on TOP GUN, choose curved-end straps cut specifically for the case, or accept the gap with a flat strap.
Big Pilot 43 trap. The Big Pilot 43 (IW329301, IW329303) uses 21mm lug width, not 22mm. Buyers expecting "Big Pilot = 22mm" routinely mis-order. Verify your reference number before ordering.
Portugieser Chronograph 41 trap. Despite being a 41mm case, the Portugieser Chronograph (IW3714, IW3716) uses 20mm lug width. Other Portugieser references at 41mm and up use 22mm.
